The band's current line-up consists of James Hetfield (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Lars Ulrich (drums, percussion), Kirk Hammett (lead guitar, backing vocals), and Robert Trujillo (bass guitar).

Biography:
Metallica was formed in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield. The two had met through an advertisement Ulrich had placed in a Los Angeles-based music newspaper. After recruiting bassist Cliff Burton and guitarist Dave Mustaine, the band released their first album, Kill 'Em All, in 1983. Mustaine was soon fired and replaced by Kirk Hammett. The band's fourth album, …And Justice for All, was released in 1988 and featured their first top-40 single, "One". Metallica's fifth album, the self-titled Metallica (also known as The Black Album), was released in 1991 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The album has been certified 16x platinum in the US and has sold over 30 million copies worldwide.

Musical Career:
Metallica has released 10 studio albums, four live albums, five extended plays, 26 music videos, and 37 singles. The band has won nine Grammy Awards, and has had five consecutive albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200. Metallica has also been included in a number of notable lists, including being ranked as one of the greatest artists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine in 2004.
